The boundaries of fashion are being tested and pushed to new heights through 3D printing and NFT’s. This is revolutionizing the industry by changing how garments are produced, how they are consumed and how the carbon footprint is impacted.

The Fashion Industry is the second largest polluter in the world. As clothes are made with toxic materials and are becoming more and more disposable by consumers with only 1% of clothes being recyclable worldwide. In the U.S. alone the equivalent of 600,000 containers of clothing end up in landfills every year. How do we change this reality? We need to change how we consume and produce clothes. 3D printing your clothes, when and how you want through digital files at your home all by yourself. By 2030 how we manufacture garments has the potential to change dramatically. However, in order to achieve these innovations, NFTs and 3D printable fashion needs attention to be further developed and improved so it can be scaled to reap the benefits.

NFT’s in the Fashion Industry

In order to understand the benefits of NFTs in the fashion industry, it important to understand what NFTs are. NFT stands for non-fungible token, which means that they are not interchangeable. These tokens are unique, given they are non-fungible they have a certain value similar to other well-known forms of currency i.e., Euro or Bitcoin. However, compared to Bitcoin, an NFT is not interchangeable with another NFT, they have an individual identification code and cannot be interchanged, which would be the case for Bitcoin or Euro. As such, it allows digital goods of any kind; illustrations, video clips, social media posts and assigns a unique value. This translates to how these NFTs can be used in the 3D fashion printing industry.

How 3D Printing Works

The boundaries in 3D Fashion printing are limitless as there is the ability to produce any structure including but not limited to shoes, accessories, garments, and other textiles. 3D printing is produced layer after layer. The individual has the ability to see the digital finished product before it goes to production; allowing for changes in design or material to be made before the physical product is produced. This reduces time that would have been wasted modifying/changing the design after the product would have been produced and materials. These printers have come a long way, as progressions have been made toward more sophisticated technology. These advancements have reduced the time it takes to make an individual product, however more innovations are still needed. The goal is for 3D fashion printing production to occur within minutes.

The Pioneer of 3D Fashion

Danit Peleg, is a fashion designer and known for pioneering 3D printed Fashion. Her journey began doing her graduate project at Shenkar College of Engineering and Design, where she tested norms by creating an entire collection using desktop 3D home printers. This accomplishment broke headlines in 2015 for being the first designer in the world to create an entire collection using desktop 3D printers. Adding to Peleg’s list of accomplishments, she was invited by the Paralympic Games to design a 3D printed dress for Amy Purdy, a double-leg amputee dancer, to wear for her performance at the Opening Ceremony. Over the years, her team has been working with researchers and printing companies to work towards evolving the technologies and making it accessible to realize its impact. Peleg is also a consultant for fashion brands to advise on incorporating these technologies.

By integrating 3D fashion printing on a larger scale, it will dramatically change the way we consume fashion. Peleg envisions it to be similar to how we shop for music today, the consumer would be able to pick a file of a garment from their favourite fashion brand or designer and purchase the file and personalize it. Following which they would fill the printer with their preferred fabric, or whichever is appropriate for that season, and will be able to print the personalized garment within minutes from the comfort of their own home. If this vision is achieved this means traditional fashion supply chains will be disrupted. As well, this would create a more sustainable and alternative for manufacturing in the future.

NFT’s and 3D Printing

Peleg’s website offers insight to the progression of NFTs & 3D printing. The team is working towards developing this and making it more accessible on a larger scale. Faster printers and better materials combined with the power of NFTs make Danit’s vision of downloading and printing clothes now closer than ever. The collectors will have the ability to see how the digital garments look through the Instagram AR Instagram filter “3DP fashion NFT”, following which they will download the unlockable NFT file, and print the design at the nearest 3D printer with the ownership rights from its NFT.

In order to realize Peleg’s dream for 3D printing and all of its benefits it will have to be achieved on a large scale. This innovation allows for consumers to customize and personalize the NFT. Moreover, allowing personalization to clothes like we have never seen it before. This way of fashion will promote reduction in the fashion industry’s carbon footprint and optimize recycling of garments. The benefits will be endless.

This is just the beginning for NFTs and 3D printable fashion. Peleg is changing the landscape of the fashion industry unlike ever before, with the potential to change not only how clothes are produced but how they are consumed. This revolutionary technology is here to stay and to positively disrupt the fashion industry’s supply chain.
