A Star-Studded CFDA Awards
The Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) Fashion Awards kicked off its 67th annual event, showcasing and celebrating the best of fashion that year — bringing together designers, stylists, and celebrities alike for one night in what is described to be the Oscars of fashion. A night dedicated to the beautiful craft, art, and evolution that is fashion at Casa Cipriani in New York this year.
There were introductions of new, promising awards as well as celebrations of what fashion has achieved in 2022.
A Rundown
Not only are the CFDA awards created to present innovations within the industry, but also recognize diversity and inclusion — pushing for equality in front and behind the scenes of fashion. Established in 2020, the Positive Social Influence Award is given to those that are making changes in the industry for the better, incorporating ethical values to transform fashion to be more inclusive. This year, the award was given to The House of Slay, whose work has been dedicated to aiding the Asian American Pacific Islander community through acts such as creating a diverse medium of comic books where its founders were turned into superheroes and donating to the AAPI Victory Fund. The five founders ensured their ethics were are the forefront of their craft, saying “At House of Slay, we built this house on community and inclusion and made these foundations our central focus”.
Leather & Boa
The Fashion Icon Award was awarded to Lenny Kravitz, acknowledging his always stunning looks throughout this year — keeping originality and artistry close to his heart while styling. Bradley Cooper, who presented this award, celebrated Kravitz through powerful statements, saying “There is no other musician alive today who wears leather and leopard-like Lenny”. When accepting his award, Kravitz spurred messages of empowerment, describing how being yourself is important and integral, all while wearing fabulous LaQuan leather pants with his iconic ostrich boa.
Innovation Wear
For the first time in CFDA history, the newly-created Innovation Awarded (partnered with Amazon Fashion) was awarded to Kim Kardashian for Skims, alongside co-founders Jens and Emma Grede. The shapewear-focused company was celebrated for creating a diverse size and innovative design, proving to reach mass success within the market and its customers.
CFDA & Sustainability
CFDA’s commitments to fashion do not only end with the art, but also continue to include sustainability in their efforts. One of the critical pillars of the award association is to uphold sustainability by providing “open access, tactical, sustainable strategies resources, and meaningfully supporting varied creative professional journeys”.
With their resources, the committee is pledging to support America’s fashion culture in reaching 2030 decarbonisation goals and 2050 net-zero targets. Creating circularity within the industry by promoting sustainable innovation through the inclusion of ecosystems. It takes all of us to make greener changes within the fashion industry, and the recognition of such issues by the CFDA poses a strong stance on the direction the industry is headed.
